DKT Nigeria Achieves another Milestone
DKT Nigeria has achieved another milestone with the registration of Eloira with NAFDAC. Eloira is a Hormonal Intrauterine System which contains Levonorgestrel 52 mg. The system releases small doses of levonorgestrel for a 5 year period thus preventing pregnancy. Due to its low releasing mechanism Eloira is safe, reversible and highly effective in preventing pregnancy for up to five years. It also has the advantage of quick return to fertility almost as soon as it is removed. The Levonorgestrel in ELOIRA is released at an approximate rate of 20 micrograms (0.02mg) per day for up to five years and due to the low dosage released per day, it has a good side-effect profile. ELOIRA has also been approved for its gynecological non-contraceptive benefits like:
·Menorrhagia and Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding ( DUB)
Eloira helps to reduce heavy or prolonged menstrual periods in women. Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB) affect 22% to 30%of women in Nigeria. DUB is an abnormal uterine bleeding without any clinical organic pathology. ELOIRA works locally in the uterus to help treat DUB
·Endometriosis and adenomyosis:
ELOIRA helps to treat endometriosis and adenomyosis- A disorder of the inner lining of the uterus that causes endometrial type tissue to grow in other areas such as the fallopian tube or ovaries and cause severely painful periods, excessive bleeding, chronic pelvic pain and infertility.
·Management of Uterine Fibroid:
Eloira can help manage uterine fibroid by reducing the bleeding that comes with it. Some studies claim that this could also help shrink the fibroid, providing non-surgical treatment of large fibroids.
The registration of Eloira by the regulatory authorities will enable DKT to increase accessibility, availability and affordable of this important product. In addition DKT provides healthcare providers training of IUDs including Eloira.
ELOIRA is an obstetrician and gynecologist’s dream product and it is high quality, readily available and affordable.
